Purpose
by Lucetta Scaraffia
The purpose of the festival is to revive the show
of the sacred art as a spiritual experience, which has
always been in the Christian tradition before the secularization,
even though in different ways depending on the historical
periods and the contexts. The art as spiritual way is
already in the title the first stage of a journey that
will continue in the coming years. |

Why Varallo Sesia
Varallo with its Sacred Mount is a unicum in the
Italian panorama: a center of artistic life active for
at least four centuries -after the end of the 15th to
the end of the 18th century- in the production of a particular
type of sacred art, very clearly aimed to give the possibility
to the faithful to live, even in the form that today we
would call virtual , the experience of the pilgrimage
in the Holy Land, a travel increasingly dangerous after
the Moslem conquest.
A place where you cannot separate the study of the art
as history of style from the art as a spiritual experience.
Varallo can therefore be considered the ideal place to
propose that spiritual reading of the works of religious
art which was the true purpose for which they were commissioned
and produced.
The study of this aspect of sacred art was recently resumed,
but it is already rich with innovative ideas and very
interesting researches, of which Timothy Verdon is one
of the most important and well-known protagonists.
The Sacred Mount of Varallo has been designated Humanity
Cultural Heritage by the UNESCO. |

Contents
The event aims to be a total immersion experience – by
a strong impact developed in an extended period of time –
in the issues raised by the title Imago veritatis. art as spiritual
way:
*image, “theatre” as point of connection
with the current culture as well as philological leitmotif of
the Sacred Mount; “truth” not only for the verism
of figures and scenes of the Sacred Mount but also and primarily
as emotional experience Gospel's truths which in turn make contact
with the truth in person, Christ;
*art as plastic, architectural and pictorial
realization, but also as Christian ars vivendi et operandi;
*nature as relationship between an ecological
nature which is the framework of the Sacred Mount and the human
nature of the pilgrims, invited to understand their creature
condition through contemplation, in the nature of God made man,
who died and risen in our nature, which he then high in the
resurrection.
The elastic structure of the weekend wants to involve both the
local population and the wider public of art's lovers and of
people who aspire to experience something spiritual, attracting
both participants prepared to undertake for the whole weekend
– both persons participating only for a day. Here is the
form of the festival: an intellectual frame with “lectio
magistralis” and pilgrimages supporting the free experience
of listening to conferences, visits to the Sacred Mount, readings
and music through the streets of Varallo, concerts of sacred
music, exhibitions.
